I had one of those moments that makes you question your memory.
Growing up, everyone in my family called the game blackjack. Same deck, same goal, same arguments over aces. I never had a reason to think otherwise.
A few weeks ago I was watching a video about casino games and realized the rules didn’t quite match what I remembered. After digging around, it turned out we’d been playing Pontoon the whole time and simply calling it blackjack.
That also explained why some “obvious” rules I’d learned as a kid confused people whenever I mentioned them.
I ended up searching for blackjack rules explained just to separate the two games in my head. They’re clearly related, but once you compare them side by side, you realize how easy it is to grow up thinking they’re exactly the same.
I honestly think Pontoon is the reason so many people walk into a casino overconfident. You spend years believing you know the game, then one session is enough to realize you’ve been carrying around a completely different set of assumptions.
This happened to my cousin. He argued with the dealer for almost five minutes because he was convinced the casino was running the game wrong. Turned out he’d only ever played Pontoon at home and nobody had mentioned there were meaningful differences. That’s exactly why people keep looking for blackjack game rules instead of trusting whatever they learned growing up.
Now I’m curious how many “house rules” people think are official. I bet if everyone here described the version they learned first, we’d end up with five different games instead of one.
