I’ve been working as a cocktail server in a casino for about eight months, and somehow everyone assumes I know every game on the floor.
Truth is, I don’t.
I can tell you which blackjack tables stay busy, which dealers joke with players, and which regulars never leave before 2 a.m. But if someone actually asked me about the blackjack table rules, I’d probably sound like I’d watched two YouTube videos and called it a day.
One of the dealers keeps telling me to sit down after my shift and he’ll walk me through a few hands, but that’s exactly the problem. I don’t mind looking clueless in front of strangers. Looking clueless in front of people I work with every week? That’s a different story.
Has anyone else been in that situation? Working around casino games every day somehow made me less willing to actually try one. Did you finally get over it, or did you keep avoiding the table because everyone already expected you to know what you were doing?
Wait… are you talking about one of those huge casino resorts or a smaller local place?
I feel like that makes a massive difference. If it’s a small casino where everyone knows each other, I’d probably keep putting it off too

That’s exactly what’s messing with my head. If I make a dumb mistake, I know I’ll see the same dealers again tomorrow night 
People massively overthink this.
Read one decent casino blackjack guide, learn the hand signals, buy in for the table minimum and you’re done. Nobody is expecting perfection. Honestly, the players who keep announcing they’re “new” usually attract more attention than the ones who quietly make a couple of mistakes and move on.

Working there changes things. The second you butcher an obvious decision, half the staff is gonna remember it next shift. That’s different from being some random customer they’ll never see again. I’d honestly drive to another casino for my first session.
I dealt blackjack for years. Want the truth? Dealers don’t care if you don’t know how to play casino blackjack. What gets remembered is attitude.
The guy asking a couple of questions and listening? Totally fine.
The guy who watched three TikToks, argues with the dealer, tells everyone the “correct” play and blames the table for losing… that’s the one people talk about in the break room.
Your coworkers have probably seen hundreds of beginners already. You’re making this a much bigger deal in your head than it actually is.
