Conference in vegas and now i'm googling how to play blackjack in vegas

next month i’m flying to las vegas for a work conference. i’m not even going there to gamble. i’m a photographer, so most of my time will be spent shooting events.

the problem is what happens after work.

apparently everyone from the team wants to hit a casino one evening, and they keep saying, “you can’t come to vegas and not play blackjack.”

i just laugh and change the subject.

the truth is i’ve never played a single hand in my life. i even caught myself watching beginner videos on youtube because i realized i don’t want to be the person slowing everyone down.

it’s not really about winning money. i’m more worried about looking clueless in front of coworkers. i don’t even know the blackjack table etiquette, like what’s considered normal and what instantly tells the whole table you’re a complete beginner.

did anyone else go to vegas without knowing blackjack beforehand? was it actually as intimidating as i’m imagining?

I think you’re worrying about the wrong thing.

Dealers see first-time players every single day in Vegas. As long as you’re polite and paying attention, nobody’s going to roll their eyes because you hesitated once or twice. Trust me, they’ve seen much worse.

spent two nights watching random youtube videos and still completely froze when the dealer started talking to me lol.

after about five minutes i realized everyone was way more interested in their own chips than in what i was doing. i definitely made it a much bigger deal in my head than it actually was.

One suggestion: don’t make your coworkers your first audience.

Get up half an hour earlier one morning or sneak away before dinner and play a few hands by yourself. It’ll cost you less than dinner on the Strip, and by the time everyone else wants to gamble, you’ll already know how the table flows.
