i’ve been dealing poker at a local card room for a little over a year now. mostly cash games with a few tournaments here and there. i enjoy the job, the players know me, and i finally got comfortable with the pace after the first few months.
the thing is, i’ve started looking over at the blackjack tables a lot more lately. the dealers always seem busy, the games never really stop, and somehow they manage to keep everything moving while talking to players the whole time. it actually looks pretty interesting from the outside.
my main question is about blackjack dealer training. if someone already has experience dealing another table game, do casinos usually shorten the training, or do they basically treat everyone as a beginner?
what i’m really trying to figure out is whether making the switch actually makes sense financially. i’ve heard completely different stories about tips. one guy told me blackjack dealers usually do better because there are more hands every hour. another said poker is hard to beat once you’ve built up a regular player base that knows you.
money obviously isn’t the only reason i’d switch, but i’d be lying if i said it didn’t matter. i don’t really want to spend weeks learning a new game only to find out i’m making less than i do now.
just wondering if anyone here has actually made that move and whether you regretted it or not.
